Wayfaring Stranger – Tony Rice Solos – Standard and TAB

The great Tony Rice recorded this solo a couple of times. They are just short 8 bar solos, but they are both perfect in my opinion. Wayfaring Stranger is a beautiful tune, recorded many, many great ways by tons of people.  I’ve always loved this tune. Seems to be the source for many other songs. Learn the song, too. It is good for you.

The first solo is found on the Emmylou Harris album, Roses in the Snow, from 1980. The whole album is ridiculous, you need to check it. You can here this version here.
The second solo is from one of my favorite albums, Cold on the Shoulder, by Tony Rice, released in 1983. Buy it. Buy them both. You can hear the track here.

As usual, the fingerings are mine, and may be great, or you may have a better idea, or just what works for you. Listen to recordings, learn solos, play along. Get it up to tempo and enjoy.  Click on image for pdf.

Notice how he quotes himself in the opening phrase, a classic, perfect, lead-in line.

Seven Come Eleven – Charlie Christian Guitar Solo and Head – Standard Notation and TAB

Here is where so much jazz guitar comes from. We (jazz guitarists and the whole universe) are seriously indebted to Charlie Christian. Really study this one, notice how it sits on chords shapes. Memorize and play along, it’s zippy! Written in Standard Notation and TAB. Of course, other fingerings are possible, and depending upon how you play, advised. Try them out. (Advantage: Note readers.;p)

Some fingerings might have other options. I’ve also included Benny Goodman’s great lead line for the bridge during the head, you want this, trust me. Also, I’ve included the background riff, played by piano and bass at the beginning of the song. (note: Pianist plays wrong note the first time through, but no other time during the piece. So, the end of the figure is Ab.)

You should already own this track, if you don’t, go get it. Buy it, don’t steal it, c’mon, man.
You can also listen on the youtube.

Roly Poly Transcription – Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys – Intro and Guitar Solo -Standard Notation and Tab

Bob Wills and Texas PlayboysThis is the intro, for two guitars and solo for Roly Poly, by Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. Recorded in 1946. The solo, is played by Jimmy Wyble, I believe.  Maybe Cameron Hill. Not sure on that though, because I’ve heard a lot of different stories about it. If I’m wrong, please let me know. Definitely.

I’ve included the super cool intro, for Gtr 1 and Gtr 2, followed by the main guitar solo, chords written above. There are a lot of different possibilites with fingerings, so here is just one that I came up with. I play it a few different ways, and I may post different fingerings.

You can hear the track over on youtube.

I Really Need a Good Calender Plugin for this Site!

who? where? when?
who? where? when?

Ack! Time moves too fast. Or I am too slow. I need a calender to let ya’ll know when/where the gigs are.

In the meantime, Paul Tillery and I are playing twice today.

Mira Costa College in Oceanside, Student Center. 12pm.
Wellington, Mission Hills, San Diego, 7pm

If you are in any of said neighborhoods, run around like a lunatic, telling random strangers to go see the chosen ones at these locations. I’m sure this will work well. Thank you.

Arizona is freakin’ hot. Go figure.

Arizona

So, I got my AC recharged, just in case I really need it. Thank you Nick and crew at Car Diego! He said, “don’t worry mr. jon, it makes a lot of noise, but she works, no problem.”  I wasn’t going to use it because it drags on the engine and I don’t want anything to kill Zippy. But after about two hours of 109, I caved in and turned it on and kept it on until I had climbed up into northern Arizona, which is freaking gorgeous and downright chilly at 85 degrees. I had planned to stop and camp up there, near Payson, but I just kept rolling, all the way to Gallup, New Mexico. Once up in the mountains, I went through lots of lightning and some serious hail. It was cool! Too long in San Diego.

Anyways, made it New Mexico at about 8pm and saw a very funny site as I crossed the state line.  I’ve seen dogs do this, but never a horse.
Welcome to New Mexico!

I was going to camp at a Red Rock Park outside of Gallup, but a serious storm blew in, dust and sticks flying everywhere, crazy lightning and tons of hail. Found a good cheap hotel, Kayak is a good app. It hasn’t failed me yet.

Oh! and another great app I just got. It’s called DigiHUD.  It’s a speedometer and odometer. Now, why would I need that? Well, you see, there is a cable that goes down into the transmission and runs up to the speedometer, mine was old, Nick told me it might break, it might not. Either way, won’t hurt the car, just made some noise. Well, right around the time I saw the horse, I saw the speedometer needle drop and I was going 0mph while traveling 70. It was a very zen moment. I’m serious. I think. Yes. Anyway, I’ve sufficiently geeked out with the device and now I know how fast I’m going just based on the gear I’m in and the RPMs. All good. Still Zen.

I’m stoked to be in New Mexico, it’s a really amazing place and I haven’t been back here in over 10 years. I lived in Albuquerque many, many moons ago. ( I played in a Goth Rock band called the Voodoo Electric. I remember almost suffocating standing next to the smoke machine on one gig. Our stage show was oh-so-spooky.)

Truth be told, I miss the food. It’s freaking awesome here, and I’m going to bed so morning come sooner and I go chow down at Frontier in ABQ!

Interesting day one.

Zippy rules.

This is Zippy, old faithful, and we’re going across America. People think I’m crazy, and maybe I am, but zippy just won’t quit, gets 30mpg in town, and I’d have to be crazy to give him up.
Zip is a 1994 Mazda protege with 277,688 mi on him. I’m shooting for 300,000.
We leave in two days. Wish us luck!

Always Fall (1927 edition) – jon garner

jon g jon garner sycamore denI really love the lyrics and chord changes to this song. I’ve recorded it many times, in a bunch of different ways. This is the “1927” mix (1927 is a mythical album that exists only on my computer.)

Lyrics

What can I say that you haven’t already heard
The feeling is mutual
but never understood
What can I make in the twist in your smile
I’m not gonna guess because

It’s always fall outside my window
And it’s not necessarily oh so beneficiary
That I know
Don’t lead me to be
Expect me to be

What can I say when I can’t say a word
Notions are potions in oceans absurd
When do we hide and what do we seek
I’m not gonna guess because

It’s always fall outside my window
And it’s not necessarily oh so beneficiary
That I know
Don’t lead me to be
Expect me to be

Everybody needs to start listening
Cuz everybody feels this way every now and then
Don’t you know that it’s you
Don’t expect me to be
